'It's like they never miss a pass': Swansea's Ethan Galbraith resumes contest with City.

Ethan Galbraith breaks into a smile as he recalls the thrilling final moments of his team's stunning fightback win against Nottingham Forest in the League Cup. The encounter culminated with Galbraith temporarily wearing a spectator's eyewear after the on-field celebration.

As the match entered added time, Galbraith rattled the woodwork with a long-range shot from outside the box, and Cameron Burgess promptly hammered in the loose ball before charging toward the East Stand to revel in the moment, with fans congregating around the players.

Stunning Reversal

The result completed an incredible turnaround given the team had found themselves down 2-0 midway through the second half. During the euphoria, there was some minor mishaps. The midfielder recalled, "There was a supporter shouting out and myself and Keysy [Josh Key] were puzzled: 'What's he on about here?' Then we noticed the glasses. It was a light-hearted moment putting them on. We are on the pitch as athletes but we're humans, too, so to have a bit of craic with the fans is always good."

Pep Guardiola Test

The victory secured a fourth-round match at home against Manchester City on Wednesday, a club Galbraith came close against at the same stage of the FA Cup with Leyton Orient in February. He had a prime vantage point when his former team took the lead in stunning style, with a teammate's volley from about 45 yards going in via the crossbar and the opposition keeper. It seems unfair that it was credited as an own goal.

"You would have hoped they would've given it to him for attempting the shot from that distance," commented Galbraith, who played in the middle before switching to right wing-back after they changed formation. That meant competing with City's winger, with whom he traded tops, and the winger was among the Manchester squad who praised the way his former team played positively.

Opponent's Class

"Athletically they are very good but even the simple things and routine actions, they can just do it over and over again," he explains. "It feels like they complete every delivery and they understand how to control and slow down a game. You can believe you're all right and then abruptly they will just deliver a through ball through a line without you even seeing. You have to be switched on every second of the game. It demands a strong mentality and attention just to remain competitive."

Swansea Move

Swansea were keen on Galbraith in January and secured his signature to secure him in the summer in a significant move. He established himself as a fans' favourite across multiple campaigns at Leyton Orient and has rapidly replicated that in south Wales. At the London club he linked up again with Richie Wellens, who earlier gave Galbraith his first extended run in first-team action on loan at Doncaster from Manchester United. Then came a loan at lower division the Manchester club, before he departed his boyhood club.

Development Path

"I was perhaps a somewhat inexperienced going into men's football. I think numerous professionals would say development squad matches is completely distinct. Sometimes it feels like possession is exchanged without real physicality. You see few tackles or duels. Once you start playing men's games you have to learn quickly."

Country Call-ups

His progress reflects that maturation for both domestically and internationally, shining for Northern Ireland, who remain in contention for the global tournament next summer via the qualifying rounds and for whom he has featured in the past five games, including two matches games against a football powerhouse. The ex-coach, Galbraith's former international manager, paid him the supreme accolade, saying he was Northern Ireland's "creative maestro" given how he controls possession and his ability to spot a game-changing assist.

Humble Beginnings

This represents an incredible journey for the player from the Queens Park estate in Glengormley, just outside Northern Ireland's main city, who grew up watching his dad, his father, also a midfielder, play for Ballyclare Comrades.

Old Trafford Memory

The player's only game for Manchester United came in Kazakhstan in 2019, a European competition trip to the Kazakh capital, where they competed on an plastic turf and the stadium roof was shut owing to the weather of freezing cold. "That proved to be a long trip and it was freezing," he says, grinning. "The week before, several youth players and I practiced as a group, so that aided our adjustment. Just to accompany the senior squad and get a couple of minutes at the end was amazing."

Leaving United

What was the challenge was it to move on from Old Trafford, the club he transferred from aged 16? "This turned out quite easy, because I reached the point where I understood I wasn't going to make it at the top level. I'm extremely thankful for the time I spent there but it got to the point where I thought I required a fresh start, drop down the leagues and play professional soccer. Now I'm slowly working my way back up."

Welsh Adaptation

It is the middle of the day at the team's practice facility but Galbraith has an appointment at the early evening: a driving theory test, another move in the direction of getting on the road. Before his recent move to Sketty, the mid-twenties player was a frequent passenger in Swansea's nicknamed team minibus, a small coach driven by team personnel, Pete and Howard, which ferries players to and from training and matches.

"It's myself a teammate, the Brazilian, an Ivorian player – the Swedish defender used to be in it but has begun using his own car. It's nice to interact with the guys but I'm hoping to be the next one out of the minibus and driving. The Portuguese player likes to pull a few pranks; he's constantly causing mischief."

Fan Interactions

While playing for Leyton Orient, Galbraith would travel alongside supporters on London's Central line after beginning his trip at the area he lived in. "I tried|I attempted|My aim
